The study made by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine suggested that those people who smoke cigars are 4 times more report about the unrested after a long night sleep as compared to the non-smokers. The study was carried out by observing 40 smokers and 40 non-smokers who have undergone home polysomnography. The study also revealed that the smokers spend about less time in deep sleep than the non-smokers.

Naresh M. Punjabi, MD, PhD, FCCP at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD and the study’s author, said that: “It is possible that smoking has time-dependent effects across the sleep period. Smokers commonly experience difficulty falling asleep due to the stimulating effects of nicotine. As night evolves, withdrawal from nicotine may further contribute to sleep disturbance.”

EFFECT ON THE HAIR

We all know that hair growth from the sac-like structures that are found on the scalp called the follicles. The follicles require oxygen, vitamins, minerals and the essential nutrients for functioning in the right manner. These all help in triggering the hair growth. But, it is stated that smoking reduces the oxygen in the hair follicle and also reduce the nutrients on the skin. If the follicles do not function in the right manner, it results in the poor hair growth and loss of the hair cycle.

EFFECT ON THE SKIN

One of the major effects of smoking is that it reduces the number of nutrients getting on to your skin. This results in aging of the skin faster than the non-smokers. The skin will become dry and dull. If you are an active smoker, you can experience a premature aging of the skin between the ages of 10-20 years. It is also important to keep in mind that the nicotine results in the vasoconstriction. This is the condition where the blood vessels become narrow than the original width. Less amount of blood will flow through the narrow vessels around your face and other parts as well. The problem will be noticed clearly when you face an accident or you are suffering from any wound. As due to the vasoconstriction, it will take more time to recover. The scars will also appear bigger and redder than the normal ones. The tobacco smoke contains more than 4000 chemicals that cause the destruction of the elastin and collagen in the body. These fibres help in keeping the body tight and flexible. Reduction in the fibres causes wrinkles and sagging of the skin. You will experience sagging of the skin around the inner arms, face and the breasts. If you are an active smoker, you can experience something that is called the “smoker’s pucker” an occurrence that is quite common in the smokers.
